With the advent of the digital photography age there are more and more wedding photographers on the market making an income out of a hobby. It is tempting to choose the most cost effective option (with the escalating prices of weddings and wedding suppliers) but don’t get caught short. Many wedding photographers offer a “no frills” DVD only package offering you just a selection of professionally edited images on disc – no album. Whilst this might enable you to afford a more high-end photographer that you wouldn’t ordinarily be able to afford, it can, in the long term be not the best choice. Typically in my experience, brides who select this option print a few copies of images they love for frames and some for family – the rest of the images stay put on a disc in a drawer somewhere with a permanent “to do list ” of “put album together “on a sticky note somewhere. This rarely happens……

Putting a wedding album together takes up to 2 -3 days full time work (once the editing process is complete) to get the flow of the images down pat and to tell that couples’ story. A lot of thought and creativity goes on behind the scenes to get the layout just right with the perfect balance of creativity, telling the story, emotion and dynamic energy of the big day. Most of the insight is gained through actually shooting the event and spending so much time with the couple and picking up on their “vibe”. Many brides have asked me to put together their album post their wedding which was shot by another photographer. I choose not to do this for the following reasons; if someone else puts your album together they don’t have the added advantage of being at the event and seeing all the details and feeling the energy – they are entirely removed from your “story” . Secondly I prefer not to work with another photographer’s images as their photographic style might be completely different to my natural style which make’s putting an album together a very challenging task.

Lastly most professional photographers offer Designer “digital” Albums and Imported Italian Leather Albums which are not normally available to the man on the street only to professional photographers. These albums offer top quality durable paper, printing and covers that will withstand time (some have lifetime guarantees) and are not just cheaper albums from a retail photolab on the corner. My best advice: If you can, choose the photography package with an album or negotiate with your photographer to choose DVD only option with an option to tack on the album a few months later…
